Most PFBC-approved online courses can be completed in 3 to 8 hours. The wide range exists because online courses are self-paced — fast readers with some boating background may finish in as few as 3 hours, while those studying more carefully or with no prior boating experience may take closer to 8.
Online courses allow you to start and stop as many times as you want. Your progress is saved, so you can complete the course over several days if that fits your schedule better. There is no deadline or time limit on finishing once you begin.
Classroom-based courses typically run approximately 8 hours and are usually completed in a single day, often on a Saturday. Some organizations split the course across two shorter sessions.
In-person courses follow a fixed schedule and cannot be paused. You must attend the entire session to be eligible for the final exam. Late arrivals may need to attend a different session.
