What the Pennsylvania Boating Exam Covers

The PFBC-approved boating safety exam covers several core topic areas. Understanding these categories will help you focus your study time:

Sample Practice Questions

Test your knowledge with these representative questions. The actual exam will be similar in format and difficulty.

Navigation Rules

  • Question 1: When two powerboats approach each other head-on, what should each operator do?

PWC-Specific Rules

Exam Format and Passing Score

The Pennsylvania boating safety exam is administered at the end of the approved course. For most online courses, the exam is a multiple-choice test with 60 questions. You need a score of 80% or higher (48 out of 60 correct) to pass.

If you do not pass on the first attempt, most course providers allow you to retake the exam at no additional cost. Review the sections you struggled with before retaking.

Tips for Passing the Exam

  • Do not rush through the course material. The information you learn directly appears on the exam.
  • Pay close attention to Pennsylvania-specific rules — these are the questions most people miss.
  • Know the age rules, especially the differences between motorboat and PWC requirements.
  • Understand right-of-way rules for all situations: head-on, crossing, and overtaking.
  • Remember the 100-foot no-wake zone rule and which situations trigger mandatory PFD wear.
  • Review the BUI BAC thresholds and penalty categories.

What Happens After You Pass

After passing the exam, you receive an immediate temporary Boating Safety Education Certificate that you can print and use right away. This temporary certificate is valid for 60 days.

Your permanent plastic certificate card will arrive by mail within 4-6 weeks. Once you have it, you are certified for life — no renewal or retesting is ever required. For details on course length and what to expect, see our guide to how long the Pennsylvania boating course takes.
