Take an Official State-Approved Boater Safety Course

How to Replace a Lost Alabama Boating License

Quick Answer

To replace a lost, stolen, or damaged Alabama boater education card, send a written request and a $5 fee to the ALEA Marine Patrol Division. You can also request a replacement for a name change. The process is handled by mail.

If you haven’t earned your certification yet, start with the Alabama boater safety course.

When You Need a Replacement

You should request a replacement card if your Alabama Boater Safety Certification card has been:

  • Lost or misplaced.
  • Stolen.
  • Damaged or destroyed.
  • Issued under a previous legal name.

Remember, Alabama law requires you to carry your boater education card on board whenever you operate a motorized vessel. If you cannot produce it during an ALEA Marine Patrol inspection, you may receive a citation.

How to Request a Replacement

Send a written request to the ALEA Marine Patrol Division’s Education Section. Include:

  • Your full legal name (and previous name, if requesting a name change).
  • Your date of birth.
  • Your certification number (if known).
  • A brief explanation of why you need a replacement.
  • A $5 duplicate certificate fee (payable by cash, certified check, or money order).

How Long Does It Take?

Processing times vary, but most replacement cards are mailed within a few weeks of ALEA receiving your request. If you need to be on the water before your replacement arrives, contact ALEA to ask about verification options or carry any supporting documentation you have.

What If I Took My Course Through a Third-Party Provider?

If you completed your boater safety course through an approved online provider, the provider may also keep records of your completion. You may be able to request a duplicate certificate of completion directly from them. However, the official Alabama boater education card must still be obtained through ALEA.
