Boating with Children in Alabama: Safety Rules and Requirements

Quick Answer

Alabama law requires children under 8 to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved PFD at all times on a boat (unless in an enclosed cabin). Children ages 12–13 can earn their boater certification but must be supervised by a certified adult 21 or older. Kids under 12 cannot operate a motorized vessel.

Life Jacket Requirements for Kids

All children under 8 years of age must wear a properly secured, U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device at all times while on any vessel in Alabama. The only exception is if the child is inside an enclosed cabin.

The PFD must be the correct size for the child. An adult-sized PFD on a small child does not meet the legal requirement and may not function properly in an emergency. Look for PFDs rated for your child’s weight range.

For children 8 and older, PFDs must be on board and readily accessible but are not required to be worn at all times (except on PWC or when being towed). That said, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency strongly recommends that all children wear a PFD regardless of age.

Age Rules for Young Operators

Alabama has specific age thresholds for operating motorized vessels:

  • Under 12: Cannot operate a motorized vessel under any circumstances.
  • Ages 12–13: May obtain a Boater Safety Certification and operate a motorized vessel, but must be supervised by a person at least 21 years old who also holds a valid certification and is seated in a position to take immediate control.
  • Age 14 and up: May operate independently with a valid Boater Safety Certification.

Supervision Best Practices

Beyond the legal requirements, parents and guardians should consider these safety practices when boating with children:

  • Assign an adult to watch children at all times, separate from the boat operator.
  • Teach children basic water safety, including how to float and how to call for help.
  • Keep children away from the bow, stern, and gunwale edges while the boat is in motion.
  • Apply sunscreen and provide shade—dehydration and heat exhaustion are serious risks on the water.
  • Bring extra PFDs in case a child’s PFD becomes wet, uncomfortable, or damaged.

BUI Enhancement: Minors on Board

Alabama law imposes enhanced penalties for boating under the influence when a child under 14 is on board. The minimum penalties are doubled. This underscores the seriousness Alabama places on protecting children on the water. Read more about Alabama BUI laws.

PWC and Kids

Children must meet the same age requirements to operate a personal watercraft as they do for boats. Additionally, all PWC riders—including child passengers—must wear a PFD at all times. There is no age minimum for riding as a passenger on a PWC, but the child must be able to sit safely and wear a properly fitting PFD.
