Can You Boat at Night in Alabama?

Quick Answer

Yes, you can legally operate a boat at night in Alabama. However, you must display proper navigation lights between sunset and sunrise and during any period of reduced visibility. The specific lights required depend on your vessel type and size.

Night boating rules are covered in the Alabama boater safety course.

Navigation Light Requirements

Alabama follows the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Rules for lighting. All vessels operating between sunset and sunrise or during reduced visibility (fog, heavy rain, etc.) must display the appropriate navigation lights. Running without required lights is a boating violation.

Light Configurations by Vessel Type

Powerboats Under 39.4 Feet (12 Meters)

  • Red and green sidelights (or a combination bow light) visible from at least one nautical mile.
  • A white stern light visible from at least two nautical miles.
  • An all-round white light (or masthead light and stern light combination) visible from at least two nautical miles.

Sailboats Under Sail

  • Red and green sidelights.
  • A white stern light.

Sailboats under 23 feet may combine sidelights and stern light into a single tri-color light at the masthead.

Non-Motorized Vessels Under 23 Feet

Kayaks, canoes, rowboats, and similar small vessels are not required to mount permanent navigation lights. However, they must have a white light (flashlight or lantern) ready at hand to display in time to prevent a collision.

Personal Watercraft (PWC)

PWC may legally operate after dark in Alabama, but only if equipped with the required navigation lights. Most stock PWC do not come with navigation lights installed, which effectively limits most PWC to daytime use unless aftermarket lights are added and properly configured.

Anchor Lights

If you anchor your boat at night in an area where other vessels may be present, you must display an all-round white light visible from at least two nautical miles. This applies to all vessels and helps other operators see and avoid your anchored boat.

Safety Tips for Night Boating

Night boating introduces risks that are not present during daylight. Keep the following in mind:

  • Reduce your speed. Objects, swimmers, and other vessels are much harder to spot at night.
  • Keep your eyes adjusted to the dark. Avoid looking directly at bright lights on board.
  • Post a dedicated lookout in addition to the operator.
  • Make sure all passengers know where safety equipment is stowed, including PFDs, a flashlight, and a sound-producing device.
  • Check your navigation lights before departure. Replace any burnt-out bulbs.
  • Be especially cautious near dams, locks, and areas with submerged hazards.

Penalties for Operating Without Lights

Operating a vessel without the required navigation lights during nighttime or reduced visibility is a boating violation in Alabama. ALEA Marine Patrol officers enforce lighting requirements and can issue citations on the spot.
