Take an Official State-Approved Boater Safety Course

Do You Need a Boating License for a Kayak in Alabama?

Quick Answer

No. If your kayak is non-motorized (paddle-only), you do not need a boating license or registration in Alabama. However, if you add any type of motor—including a trolling motor—you must have an Alabama Boater Safety Certification and register the vessel.

Non-Motorized Kayaks: No License, No Registration

Alabama law exempts operators of non-motorized vessels—including kayaks, canoes, rowboats, and paddleboards—from the Boater Safety Certification requirement. Non-motorized kayaks are also exempt from vessel registration.

This means you can paddle a kayak on any Alabama waterway without taking a safety course, obtaining a license, or paying registration fees.

Motorized Kayaks: License and Registration Required

The moment you attach any type of motor to your kayak—whether it is a gas engine, electric trolling motor, or any other mechanical propulsion—the exemptions no longer apply. You will need:

  • An Alabama Boater Safety Certification (obtained by completing an approved course and applying through ALEA).
  • Vessel registration through your county license office.

You must register a newly motorized kayak within 72 hours of adding the motor.

Safety Equipment Requirements for Kayakers

Even without a license, Alabama kayakers must still follow certain safety equipment rules:

  • PFDs: You must carry one U.S. Coast Guard-approved PFD for each person in the kayak. Children under 8 must wear one at all times.
  • Navigation lights: Non-motorized kayaks under 16 feet must have a white light (such as a flashlight) ready at hand to display when operating after dark or in reduced visibility.
  • Sound device: A whistle or horn for signaling is recommended and may be required in certain waterways.

What About Canoes and Paddleboards?

The same rules apply. Non-motorized canoes and stand-up paddleboards are exempt from both operator certification and registration. Add a motor, and the exemptions disappear.
