Video Transcript: Do You Need a Jet Ski License in Florida?
0:00
If you’re planning to hop on a jet ski in Florida, one of the first questions you probably have is, “Do I actually need a license to drive a jet ski here?”0:08
The short answer is yes, you do, but it’s technically not called a license. Let me explain.0:12
In Florida, if you were born on or after January 1st, 1988, you’re required to complete an approved boating safety course and carry a Florida boating safety education identification card anytime you operate a jet ski or any other vessel with 10 horsepower or more.0:29
Florida doesn’t use the term boating license. Instead, this boater ID card is what proves you’ve met the state’s safety education requirements, and it doesn’t expire.0:43
So, if you’re in that born after 88 group and you want to run a jet ski on Florida waters, you need that card.0:50
Here’s how to get that card step by step.1️⃣ Take an approved boating safety course.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, FWC, approves a list of providers. Spoiler alert, Recademics is an approved online course option, and I think it’s the best one out there, but more on that later.2️⃣ Complete the course.
During the course, you’ll learn navigation rules, jet ski and boat operation, safety gear, right of way, emergency procedures, and Florida-specific boating laws. Any course you select will take about 3 hours to complete.3️⃣ Pass the final exam.
It’s usually multiple choice, and after you pass, you’ll be able to download your boating safety education ID card. Make sure to carry this card and photo ID whenever you’re operating a jet ski.1:43
If you’re ready to get started on your course, you can go to recademics.com. Our boater safety courses are state-approved and designed to get you on the water fast. Rated 4.9 out of five stars by our customers. They love how simple, convenient, and easy we make the process. But you don’t have to take our word for it. You can read real reviews from real students on our website or Google.2:07
Now, here’s a pro tip. If you’ve made it this far, if you’re just renting a jet ski for the day and don’t already have a card, there’s a shortcut.2:14
The FWC allows approved vendors to issue a temporary boating safety certificate after you pass a much shorter safety test. The test can be taken online or even at the rental shop. The temporary certificate is only valid for 90 days, but it lets you legally operate during your trip.2:31
So, quick recap. Born on or after January 1st, 1988, you need a boating safety education ID card to operate a jet ski in Florida. Visitors and tourists have to follow the same rules as residents.2:46
If you want to knock out the requirement online and get on the water fast, you can take an FWC-approved course like the one offered by Recademics. I’ll drop the link below so you can get started.2:55
Safe boating and we’ll see you out there.
