Pre-Departure Checklist

This checklist is a set of important things to look over before you start a boat trip. It helps you make sure you’re ready for anything on the water. It’s also good for keeping new people on your boat safe and comfortable.

• Trailer Check: Look at the wheel bearings, tires, lights, and connections to your vehicle.
• Weather Check: Look at the local weather forecast for your boating location and time.
• Life Jackets (PFD): Have a wearable PFD for each person. Make sure they fit well and are in good shape, encourage passengers to wear them.
• Throwable PFD: If your boat is over 16 feet long, have a throwable PFD onboard.
• Emergency Signals: Have ways to call for help on board including visual distress signals and radios.
• Necessary equipment: Make sure you have all the equipment that state and federal laws require.
• Steering and Speed Controls: Make sure they work correctly.
• Boat Lights: Check that all the lights on the boat work.
• Fuel System: Look for any leaks in the fuel tank, lines, and carburetor.
• Engine Area: Check for oil leaks.
• Hose Connections: Look for leaks or cracks and make sure clamps are tight.
• Engine Compartment Water: Drain any water and put the drain plug in place.
• Fuel Level: Check you have enough fuel and know where to get more.
• Battery: Make sure it’s fully charged.
• Fire Extinguishers: Have them on board and readily accessible.
• Engine Cut-Off Switch (ECOS): If equipped, check the condition and wrist lanyard.
• Signaling devices: Have a horn or air horn, sound producing devices, that can be heard for at least half a mile and lasts four seconds. Keep extra air for portable horns.
• Docking and Anchoring Gear: Have an anchor, chain, extra lines, and at least two fenders. Check the lines for wear.
• Papers: Carry your boat’s registration and other required documents, such as your boater education card.
• Local Rules: Know about any local boating dangers or rules.
• Float Plan: Tell someone your plan, when you’ll be back, and who to contact in an emergency.
