If you’re operating a recreational boat less than 26 feet with an engine, you need to wear an engine cut-off device when the boat is moving faster than displacement speed, up to planing speed. This device is also known as a “Kill Switch.”
The Engine Cut-Off Switch, is made to instantly turn off the engine if the boat driver is thrown from the driver’s seat. Not using it can result in runaway boats or the “Circle of death”.
The “Circle of death” is a dangerous situation where a boat spins out of control in a tight circle at high speed. This happens if the operator is no longer controlling the boat. The boat can hit anything in its way and won’t stop until it crashes, runs out of fuel, or is stopped somehow.
