PFD Rules for Boats
Boat operators must follow national and state rules about safety gear on their boats. This means having the right number and type of PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices) for everyone on board and making sure they’re easy to get to.
What You Need on Your Boat:
- 1 PFD For Every Person: Each person on the boat should have at least one wearable PFD.
- PFDs of the Correct Type: Each PFD must be the correct type for the intended activity and follow its label instructions. For example, if you plan to water ski, you must have PFDs appropriate for towed water sports. This information can be found on the PFD label or owner’s manual.
- A Throwable PFD for Larger Boats: If your boat is 16 feet or longer, you need a throwable PFD.
- Children’s Safety: Any child under 13 must wear a USCG-approved PFD unless in an enclosed cabin.
How to Store PFDs:
- Wearable PFDs must be readily accessible.
- Throwable PFDs must be immediately accessible.
Readily accessible means you can get to it easily, but it might take a moment. It’s about not having big barriers in the way.
Immediately accessible means getting to it instantly, with no waiting. It’s about speed.
