In addition to safety, the course emphasizes responsible recreation—encouraging boaters to respect shorelines, reduce wakes in sensitive areas, and help keep waterways clean.

Upon completion of the online course, students must also schedule an in-person proctored exam in order to complete all certification requirements. The online course alone does not result in official certification.
